The pupil premium is additional funding given to schools so that they can support their disadvantaged pupils and close the attainment gap between them and their peers. It was introduced in April 2011 and is allocated to schools to work with pupils who have been registered for free school meals (FSM) at any point in the last six years, looked after children and those of service personnel also attract funding.
New Horizons Primary School serves a diverse community where deprivation is high. There are many complex barriers towards learning that pupils need support to overcome. We support our disadvantaged pupils by improving the quality of the teaching they receive and ensuring our curriculum powerfully addresses social disadvantage. We also target our funding on training additional support staff in proven interventions that raise attainment in speaking and listening, reading and maths. This is supported by experts such as our resident Speech and Language Therapists. Finally, we safeguard children from being exposed to wider barriers to their learning (such as poverty factors, housing problems and parental challenges).
